“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart on Monday ripped Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) who — after folding on his plans to filibuster and vote against a GOP funding bill — revealed that he likes to talk with Republicans at the gym.
“That’s your fucking plan?” said Stewart of a strategy pushed by Schumer, who caught major backlash from Democrats after he and other colleagues in the Senate helped advance the GOP plan, thus averting a government shutdown.
Schumer, in an interview with The New York Times on Sunday, said he prefers speaking with GOP lawmakers while at the gym because “when you’re on that bike in your shorts, panting away next to a Republican, a lot of the inhibitions come off.”
Stewart didn’t hold back, “‘You know, actually Chuck, I would like to work with you on Medicaid reform. Also, I never told anybody this but I once jerked a guy off at a park. Oh this elliptical, I just lose my inhibitions!’”
Moments earlier, Stewart played a clip of Schumer telling the Times that Republicans began working with his party after Trump’s public approval rating dropped below 40%.
“He was at 51, he’s now at 48, we’re going to keep at it, keep at it, keep at it until he goes below 40. When it happens, I am hopeful that our Republican colleagues will resume working with us,” Schumer said.
“You’re going to keep at it. Keep at it, keep at it, keep at it. At what? This was it. This was the it that you would have been keeping at,” Stewart said.
He then blasted the plan for Democrats to keep “fecklessly complaining” until Trump’s approval rating sours, turning to a missing “crucial piece of information in Schumer’s popularity calculation”: the party’s historic unpopularity.
“You’ve got to get Trump to lose 8 points of popularity just for you to get to the point where you’re 13 points below him. Your approval is only 7 points above where it turns red and goes into low power mode,” Stewart quipped.
