“Daily Show” correspondent Jordan Klepper on Tuesday mocked Donald Trump and his administration for not getting their “story straight” on the Jeffrey Epstein files.
Klepper turned to a clip of the president who — when asked about files tied to the late convicted sex offender — claimed that the files were “made up” by ex-FBI Director James Comey, Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s administration.
Klepper quipped that Trump — who once described Epstein as a “terrific guy” and socialized with him on several occasions — was “cool as a cucumber” and “not worried about a thing” before tearing apart his claim.
“So let me get this straight, according to Trump, all the top Democrats got together and said, ‘Let’s create some fake files that destroy Trump’s political career.’ They don’t ever use them, they let Trump get elected, don’t use them. Let Trump get elected again, still don’t use them,” Klepper said.
He continued, “And then once he’s the president, hope he releases the files without ever looking at them? You know, that plan sounds so inconceivably bad, I do believe the Democrats might’ve come up with it.”
Trump has continued to face backlash from his supporters since the Justice Department released a memo on Epstein that contradicted Attorney General Pam Bondi’s past claim that the disgraced financier had a “client list.”
Later in his “Daily Show” monologue, Klepper roasted Trump over his “surprisingly sympathetic” response to Epstein’s longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell being arrested and charged with sex trafficking in July 2020.
“I don’t know, I haven’t really been following it too much. I just wish her well, frankly,” said Trump when asked about Maxwell at the time.
Klepper then turned to an August 2020 clip of Trump stressing that he still wishes her “well” and he’s “not looking for anything bad” for Maxwell.
“What are you talking about? You wish bad things on everybody! Suddenly, you’re wishing Ghislaine well? You were harder on Kristen Stewart for cheating on Robert Pattinson,” he quipped.
