“And Just Like That…” actor Sarah Jessica Parker has talked about the hypocrisy of “so many people on the other side” politically who have suggested she just “shut up and act” and refrain from making politically charged statements.
“They seem to want everyone who disagrees to shut up,” the “Sex & The City” star, who endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful 2024 campaign against Donald Trump, told Nicolle Wallace during the latest episode of the MSNBC anchor’s “The Best People” podcast.
“It’s the weirdest thing, but not their side,” Parker explained. “It’s so off-kilter that ‘Who can talk and who can’t? Who is told to shut up and who isn’t?’ I’m just a citizen.”
Parker announced she would vote for Harris via an Instagram post, just two weeks before the election. She shared an image of herself placing a Harris campaign sign in a window alongside a ding at now-Vice President JD Vance’s “childless cat ladies” comment and a long list of reasons for her support.
Despite the post, though, Parker told Wallace she is usually hesitant to comment politically on social media. “I often don’t talk on social media because A) I don’t think it’s a place that’s deserving of any real, complicated conversation,” she said.
“I’m not interested in like quick little snippets when it’s dealing with conflict or even elections sometimes. I really was so thoughtful about how I wanted to talk about the election because I think it turns into a distraction from a campaign. It turns into fodder. It’s misunderstood. You have no control over it, and I think there are so many ways to work toward a more civil society than doing it,” she continued.
“I’m vocal in the ways that I feel comfortable being vocal,” she said, before adding, “I’m not going to talk about stuff I don’t feel educated on. I’m not going to jump in on really complex areas that I feel are deserving of far more thought, consideration, nuance.”
