Anna Wintour is officially a slob.
OK, not really. But she may have proven that even she isn’t immune to a little mess.
On Monday, during the 2025 Met Gala, eagle-eyed social media users on X, formerly Twitter, spotted a tiny flaw on the Vogue editor-in-chief’s custom Louis Vuitton gown.
Wintour paired the silver embroidered dress with a powder blue coat, her signature bob and a little red stain that can be seen slightly below her exposed hand on the left side of her dress.
Although the fashion icon is pretty private, she has a reputation for perfectionism. Wintour has earned her notoriety in part to the 2006 film, “The Devil Wears Prada” — with many believing that Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, was based on Wintour.
She has also been the de facto host of the Met Gala since the first time she co-hosted in 1995, and makes most of the decisions for the famous event from the design of the red carpet to the star-studded guest list.
With those tidbits in mind, X users had a whole lot of fun making a big deal out of Wintour’s itty bitty stain. One popular tweet that shared a photo of Wintour’s look alongside a close-up of the stain, boasted the caption: “THE STAIN?!!! Someone is getting fired…”
Other users quickly got in on the joke.
“STOPPP. I know she was fuming when she found out,” another X user said.
“She has like 3 assistants and no one had a tide pen?” a third user questioned.
“Terrified for whatever member of Anna Wintour’s team who’s about to be on the receiving end of the rage about that stain on her dress,” a user quipped.
“stop pointing out that stain on anna wintour’s dress pls yall are gonna get some poor intern executed,” an X user cracked.
One viral tweet shared a screenshot of Miranda Priestly looking judgmental with the caption: “Anna… is that a stain on your dress?”
Although plenty of people got in on the game of poking fun of Wintour, a few X users attempted to defend her by claiming the stain wasn’t a stain.
“that’s STITCHING. not a stain…” one X user alleged.
“It looks to me like it might be a burn and not a stain,” another added.
“Water droplet 💧 No one to blame here. She should’ve closed her coat,” a user said.
And regardless, whether the spot on Wintour’s dress is a thread, burn or weirdly red water is besides the point.
The point is that It’s a flaw. And Miranda Priestly, er, Anna Wintour, does not do flaws!
Or does she?
Again, details about Wintour’s real working life and personality are largely private, and much of her public persona is linked to Streep’s phenomenal portrayal of a fictional character.
Lauren Weisberger, who wrote the 2003 novel “The Devil Wears Prada” that was adapted into the movie of the same name, has never explicitly said Priestly is based on Wintour — although she previously worked as Wintour’s assistant for a year.

Weisberger told the Daily Mail in 2010 that Priestly “wasn’t a one-to-one portrayal of Wintour. But of course my time at Vogue informed the book; there’s no denying that.”
When Wintour was asked last year about the comparisons between her and Priestly, she told the BBC that it’s “for the audience and for the people I work with to decide if there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly.”
